A barcode turns an identifier into a machine-readable pattern. The important part is not only generating the image: the encoded value, barcode format, print size and scanner all have to work together. For an internal stock label you may control the identifier yourself; for a retail product you may need a formally assigned GTIN before generating the symbol.
Start with the job the barcode must do
Before choosing a format, decide where the barcode will be scanned. Warehouse scanners, retail checkout systems, mobile apps and shipping workflows can expect different symbologies. If an existing inventory or point-of-sale system already specifies a format, follow that requirement rather than choosing the shortest-looking barcode.
- Internal inventory or SKU: Code 128 is often a flexible choice because it supports letters, numbers and common symbols.
- Retail item: EAN-13 or UPC-A is commonly used when the product already has the appropriate registered number.
- Asset or industrial label: Code 39 may be suitable where legacy scanners or established workflows require it.
- Carton or logistics case: ITF-14 is designed for specific trade-item and packaging workflows.
Choose the barcode format deliberately
A generator can draw several barcode formats, but it cannot decide which standard your business partner, scanner or marketplace accepts. If you are unsure, first check the documentation for the system that will read the barcode. ToolVero's barcode-format guide compares Code 128, EAN-13, UPC-A, EAN-8, Code 39 and ITF-14 in more detail.
Do not confuse generating a barcode image with obtaining a retail identifier. ToolVero can encode a number you provide, but it does not issue or register GTINs, UPCs or EAN product identities.
Decide what value to encode
For an internal barcode, encode a stable identifier that your own database understands—for example SKU-10482 or an asset number. Avoid encoding descriptive text that may change later. The scanner normally returns the encoded value; your inventory, POS or asset system then looks that value up.
For retail identifiers, use the value assigned through the relevant standards process. If the barcode format uses a check digit, the generator may validate or calculate it depending on the format, but you should still verify the final value against your source data.
How to create a barcode with ToolVero
- Open the ToolVero Barcode Generator.
- Select the barcode format required by your scanner or workflow.
- Enter the identifier exactly as it should be returned by the scanner.
- Adjust bar width and height only if your label size requires it.
- Generate the barcode and inspect the preview.
- Download SVG for scalable print work or PNG for common image workflows.
- Print a real-size sample and scan it with the device that will be used in production.
SVG or PNG for barcode labels?
SVG is usually the safer choice for professional label layouts because it scales without turning the bars blurry. PNG is convenient for office documents, quick mockups and systems that only accept raster images. If you resize a PNG after generation, avoid stretching it disproportionately because that can change bar widths and reduce scan reliability.
Make the barcode easy to scan
A barcode that looks correct on screen can still fail after printing. Scan reliability depends on contrast, quiet zones, bar width, print quality, surface material and the scanner itself. Use dark bars on a light background, keep clear space around the symbol, and avoid placing text, borders or graphics over the bars.
Test the final printed label—not just the on-screen preview. Thermal printers, ink spread, glossy packaging and low-resolution office printers can all change the result. If you plan to print hundreds or thousands of labels, approve one physical sample first.
How to create barcodes for inventory
For an internal inventory system, create a consistent identifier scheme before generating labels. For example, a company might use WH-A-000125 for a warehouse item or ASSET-2026-0041 for equipment. The barcode should represent that identifier consistently; product names, prices and locations can remain in the database and can change without forcing you to replace the barcode.

Can a barcode contain a website link?
Some 1D barcode formats such as Code 128 can encode a URL as text, but that does not mean every phone camera or scanner will automatically open it as a web link. For customer-facing links, menus, landing pages and mobile scanning, a QR code is usually more appropriate. See Barcode vs QR Code for the practical differences.
Common barcode mistakes
- Wrong symbology: generating a valid image that the target scanner is not configured to read.
- Unregistered retail number: creating a UPC/EAN-looking image without having a legitimate product identifier where one is required.
- Too little quiet zone: placing text or artwork too close to the bars.
- Printing too small: shrinking the symbol below what the scanner and printer can reliably resolve.
- Stretching the image: changing the horizontal proportions of the bars after export.
- No production test: checking only on a monitor instead of scanning the final label material.
Privacy and browser processing
The ToolVero Barcode Generator creates the barcode in your browser using a public JavaScript library loaded by the page. ToolVero does not send the barcode value to a ToolVero file-processing server. Because the page can load third-party library resources, browser-side processing should not be confused with a promise of zero network activity. See the Privacy Center for the current technical explanation.
Quick barcode checklist
- Confirm what system will scan the barcode.
- Choose the required format.
- Verify the identifier before generating.
- Keep adequate quiet space around the symbol.
- Prefer SVG when the barcode will be resized for print.
- Print at the intended size.
- Scan-test with the real hardware or app.
- Keep a record of the identifier assigned to each item.
Frequently asked questions
Which barcode is best for an internal SKU?
Code 128 is often a practical choice for internal SKUs because it supports letters, numbers and common symbols. Use the format required by your own inventory system if it specifies one.
Can I create a UPC or EAN barcode for a retail product?
You can generate the barcode image from a valid number, but ToolVero does not assign or register retail product identifiers. Obtain the appropriate identifier through the required standards or business process first.
Why does my barcode scan on screen but not on paper?
Printing can change bar width, contrast and sharpness. The label may also be too small or lack enough quiet space. Test the exact printer, material, size and scanner you plan to use.
Should I download PNG or SVG?
Use SVG when you need scalable print output. PNG is convenient for fixed-size image use, but avoid enlarging a small PNG after generation.
Can I use a barcode for a URL?
Yes, some 1D formats can encode a URL as text, but QR codes are usually more convenient for customer-facing web links and phone-camera scanning.
