A tip calculation has two steps: choose the amount on which to base the tip, then decide how the final total will be shared. “Fair” is a group decision, not a percentage built into the arithmetic. The ToolVero calculator takes a bill amount, a tip percentage, and a number of people; it calculates the tip, total, and an equal per-person share.
Calculate the tip and total
Use this formula:
Tip = bill amount × tip rate
Total = bill amount + tip
For a bill of $86.40 and a chosen tip of 18%, convert 18% to 0.18:
- Tip: $86.40 × 0.18 = $15.552, displayed as $15.55.
- Total: $86.40 + $15.552 = $101.952, displayed as $101.95.
The rate in this example is only an arithmetic example. Decide the rate based on your own preference, the service, local expectations, and whether the receipt already includes a service charge or gratuity.
Split the amount evenly
For four people, divide the unrounded total by four: $101.952 ÷ 4 = $25.488, which displays as $25.49 per person. Four displayed shares add to $101.96, one cent more than the displayed total of $101.95. That is ordinary currency rounding: agree who adjusts by a cent, or assign the remainder to one person so the collected amount matches the bill.
For a split that divides exactly to the cent, a $80 bill with a 15% tip has a $12 tip and a $92 total; four equal shares are $23 each.
Choose the correct bill amount first
Receipts may show tax, a service charge, or an automatic gratuity separately. Check the receipt so you do not add a second tip to an amount that already includes one. People also differ on whether they calculate a voluntary tip on the pre-tax or post-tax subtotal. The calculator has one bill input and does not decide this convention: enter the amount your group has agreed to use.
Use the calculator and verify it
- Enter the bill amount you chose as the tip base.
- Enter the tip percentage and number of people.
- Calculate, then check that the tip is approximately bill × percentage ÷ 100.
- Add the tip to the bill and compare the displayed total with the receipt.
- Multiply the displayed per-person share by the group size. If rounding leaves a cent difference, agree how to settle it.
When an equal split is not suitable
An equal split works when everyone agrees to share the same amount. It can be unsuitable when people ordered very different amounts, some guests did not share certain items, or the group wants to assign the tip individually. This calculator does not itemize a receipt, divide tax separately, apply different tip rates, or calculate mandatory service charges. Work those amounts out first or use a receipt-splitting method that supports item-level assignments.
Common checks before paying
- Confirm the currency and decimal placement. A missing decimal changes the result by a factor of 100.
- Check whether the bill input includes tax and whether the receipt already lists gratuity.
- Use the same agreed tip base for everyone in the group.
- Round only at the payment stage when possible; displayed per-person amounts may not sum exactly to the displayed total.
- Use a different method for unequal orders instead of treating an equal split as exact for every guest.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a tip and split a bill?
Multiply the agreed bill amount by the chosen tip rate, add that tip to the bill, then divide the total by the number of people. Check for a rounding remainder.
Does this calculator include tax?
No separate tax field is provided. Enter the amount you want to use as the tip base; check your receipt and local convention first.
Can it split different orders separately?
No. It calculates an equal share. For itemized orders or different contributions, assign each item and its share of tax and tip separately.
