What this PDF password checker does

If you forgot which password you used for a PDF, you may have one or more passwords you legitimately expect could work. This tool lets you test one candidate directly against the PDF without sending the document to a ToolVero processing server.

If the candidate works, use Unlock PDF to create a new copy without PDF encryption.

What it does not do

  • It does not crack an unknown password.
  • It does not automatically generate or test large password dictionaries.
  • It does not bypass a password you are not authorized to use.
  • It does not recover a password from ToolVero servers; there is no ToolVero PDF upload service behind this page.

How PDF password protection works

PDF encryption uses passwords to recover the document's encryption key. Modern PDF encryption can be strong, so knowing or legitimately obtaining the password is the normal recovery path. qpdf documents that password-protected PDFs require an appropriate password to recover the encryption key, while older weak encryption schemes have different security properties.

Forgot the password completely?

Start with legitimate sources: check your password manager, the original email or message that delivered the PDF, your organization's document instructions, or contact the person or organization that created the document. If you can obtain the password, ToolVero's Unlock PDF tool can remove the encryption in your browser.

Privacy and file handling

The PDF is read locally by your browser. ToolVero does not provide a server-side password recovery service for this tool. The page may download qpdf WebAssembly from a public CDN; that library performs the password check in your browser. See the ToolVero Privacy Center for the current technical audit and its limitations.

About this page

Written and maintained by Fahad Farid. ToolVero focuses on practical document workflows while avoiding claims that browser tools can defeat modern encryption.

Use password checking only for documents you are authorized to access

This tool is designed to test a password candidate you already have in mind. It does not provide unknown-password cracking or an automated brute-force workflow. If you own the document but do not know the password, check the source system, sender, password manager or backup before assuming the file can be recovered.
