Headings are detected from relative font sizes, bullet and numbered lines become lists, and pages are separated by horizontal rules. Complex layouts simplify: tables, multi-column pages and footnotes come out as plain text in reading order.

About PDF to Markdown

PDF to Markdown converts a PDF text layer into Markdown source. Larger text becomes headings, bullet and numbered lines become lists, wrapped lines are rejoined into paragraphs, and each new page starts after a horizontal rule — ready for notes apps, documentation, GitHub, or pasting into an AI chat.

When is PDF to Markdown useful?

Moving reports, papers and ebooks into notes or knowledge bases, feeding documents to LLM tools, and republishing PDF content as web or docs pages.

  • Use it when you need a quick result without installing desktop software.
  • Review the output when the result will be submitted, published, printed or used for an important decision.

How to use PDF to Markdown

  1. Choose a PDF, choose Convert to Markdown, skim the preview, then download the .md file or copy the Markdown to your clipboard.

Practical tips for PDF to Markdown

The cleaner the source PDF, the cleaner the Markdown: born-digital documents with real headings convert best. Check headings after conversion — they are inferred from font size, so a bold lead-in line can occasionally be promoted.

  • Keep the original input when the operation changes or converts it.

Things to know before you start

This tool reads the PDF text layer; scanned pages are images and produce no text — those files need OCR first. Tables are not reconstructed as Markdown tables, and multi-column layouts are read in the order the PDF stores them.

Privacy and file handling

ToolVero is built around browser-based utilities where the individual tool supports local processing. When a tool loads a public JavaScript library, that library is used to perform the operation in the page. Do not enter passwords, private keys or other highly sensitive information into any tool unless you understand the processing involved.

Frequently asked questions

How does PDF to Markdown decide what is a heading?

It compares each line's font size with the document's typical body size. Lines at least about 1.2× the body size become headings, with larger sizes mapped to higher heading levels.

Can it convert scanned PDFs?

No. Scanned pages have no text layer to read. Run the file through OCR first, or use Image to Text for individual pages.

Is PDF to Markdown free?

Yes. ToolVero provides this utility without requiring a subscription for routine use.
