How to Split a PDF Into Separate Pages or Ranges

Separate a long PDF into individual pages or logical page-range files.

Splitting a PDF means turning one source document into multiple PDF files. You may want one file per page, or a smaller set of page-range files such as pages 1–5 and 6–10. That is different from extracting several selected pages into one new PDF.

Choose the result you actually need

Before entering page numbers, decide whether the output should be one file or many. If you need pages 2, 5 and 9 together in one new document, use Extract PDF Pages. If you need three separate files—or every page as its own file—use Split PDF.

Choose the right result before you start

Searches such as “cut PDF pages” can mean different results. Decide whether you want several files, one file without unwanted pages, or one file made from selected pages.

Split every page into a separate PDF

Open ToolVero Split PDF, choose the source file and leave the page-groups field blank. The tool creates one PDF for every source page and packages multiple outputs into a ZIP file. This is useful for single-page invoices, certificates, forms or scanned records that need to be distributed individually.

Split by page range

Use comma-separated groups when each range should become its own PDF:

  • 1-3,4-6 creates two PDFs.
  • 1,3,5-7 creates three PDFs.
  • 10-15 creates one six-page PDF.

Page numbering in the tool refers to the PDF's actual page order, not necessarily printed page labels shown inside the document.

Try a six-page PDF and check the output

Download the fictional six-page practice PDF. Its pages are labelled “Original page 1 of 6” through “Original page 6 of 6.” It contains no personal records. Keep it open for comparison while you use Split PDF.

  1. Choose the practice PDF and enter 1-3,4-6 in Page groups. The tool should download toolvero-split-pdf.zip containing pages-001-003.pdf and pages-004-006.pdf.
  2. Open both files. The first should show original pages 1, 2 and 3; the second should show 4, 5 and 6. Confirm each has three pages and that neither boundary page is missing.
  3. For a different result, clear Page groups and run it again. The ZIP should contain six one-page PDFs named from page-001.pdf through page-006.pdf. A single group such as 2-4 downloads one PDF directly instead of a ZIP.

If you need just pages 2, 4 and 5 in one document, follow the selected-page extraction example instead. Keep the original source file until the outputs are checked.

Plan ranges around real document sections

Splits are easier to verify when they match chapters, invoice batches, appendices or forms. Write down the first and last page of each section before processing a long document. If a table of contents uses Roman numerals or custom printed labels, remember that the browser tool still counts pages from the first PDF page as page 1.

Verify the output before deleting anything

Keep the source PDF until you have checked the split files. Open the first and last page of each range, confirm the page count and make sure no page was omitted because of an incorrect number. For important documents, also check bookmarks, forms, signatures and annotations because copying pages into new PDFs can affect advanced document features even when the visible page content looks unchanged.

Large PDFs and browser memory

ToolVero performs this operation in the browser. A large or image-heavy PDF can use substantial memory because the browser must load the source and build the output files. If a very large job fails, split fewer ranges at a time or use a device with more available memory. Closing other memory-heavy tabs can also help.

Privacy and browser processing

The selected PDF is processed locally in the browser by PDF-related JavaScript libraries. ToolVero does not upload the file to a ToolVero file-processing server. The page can still load public library files from a CDN, which is why local file processing is not the same as zero network activity. See the ToolVero Privacy Center for the current technical details.

Split PDF vs extract pages

The distinction is simple:

  • Split PDF: one source PDF → several output PDFs.
  • Extract PDF Pages: selected source pages → one output PDF.

Using the correct tool keeps the workflow predictable and avoids creating unnecessary files.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split every page into its own PDF?

Leave the page-groups field blank in ToolVero Split PDF. Each source page becomes a separate PDF inside the downloaded ZIP.

How do I split a PDF into two files?

Enter two comma-separated ranges, such as 1-5,6-10. Each range becomes one PDF.

Can I split non-consecutive pages?

Yes. Enter them as separate groups, for example 1,3,8, to create three files. If you want those pages together in one PDF, use Extract PDF Pages instead.

Will splitting reduce file size?

Each output file may be smaller because it contains fewer pages, but splitting is not the same as compression. Use Compress PDF when the goal is to reduce storage or upload size.
