How to Add Page Numbers to a PDF

Add page numbers with useful formats and positions while keeping the original document unchanged.

A visible page number helps readers refer to a specific sheet in a PDF. ToolVero stamps numbering on every page of the selected file; it does not infer chapter numbering or skip a cover page automatically. Plan the sequence before you export.

Choose the format and starting value

Open Add Page Numbers and choose the PDF. Select a format such as a plain number or “Page 1 of 10.” Set the start number, font size, margin and a top or bottom position. If the first PDF page is a cover but you want the second to display “1,” consider separating the cover, numbering the body, and then using Merge PDF to put them back together.

Run a quick placement test

For a ten-page document with a start number of 1, a “Page n of total” format should show the first page as “Page 1 of 10” and the last as “Page 10 of 10.” Choose a position away from existing footers, logos and printed numbers. Export with Add Page Numbers and examine the first, middle and last pages at normal zoom.

Watch for conflicting numbers

The tool adds a visible stamp; it does not remove numbering already printed in the document. After reordering pages, the old printed number may conflict with the new stamp. Resolve that conflict in the source document where possible. A PDF viewer's page position and a visible page number can also differ when a document includes preliminaries.

Limits and privacy

Numbering is applied to the selected PDF in a browser-side workflow. It does not rebuild the table of contents, hyperlinks or cross-references. Adding marks changes the file and can invalidate a pre-existing digital signature. Keep the original for comparison. If you also need custom text such as a document ID or confidentiality note, use PDF Header & Footer instead.
