“Repair” and “recovery” describe different outcomes. Structural repair rewrites a PDF while attempting to preserve its objects. Visual recovery renders pages that remain viewable and places those page images into a new PDF. Neither method can recreate bytes that are missing from the source.
Compare the outputs
| Question | Structural repair | Visual recovery |
|---|---|---|
| What is reused? | Existing PDF objects and page data | Rendered appearance of readable pages |
| Selectable text | Often retained if source objects survive | Usually lost unless separately recreated |
| Links and forms | May survive; verify individually | Usually become flat images |
| Typical use | Broken object index or cross references | Pages display but structure cannot be rebuilt |
Choose based on the job
For a contract, research paper, form or searchable archive, start with structural repair. Preserving text and page semantics matters. For a reference copy of a few readable pages, visual recovery can be useful if structural repair fails. For an inaccessible or screen-reader-dependent workflow, a rasterized visual copy is usually inadequate.
Why a recovered image is not the original
Rendering only captures what the PDF reader can draw. It may omit invisible text, metadata, form values, bookmarks, attachments, layers, annotations and document structure. Resolution also determines how crisp small text remains. Even if the pages look right at first glance, compare every page and verify any numbers or signatures against the source.
How ToolVero labels the result
PDF Repair first attempts structural recovery with browser-side qpdf and validates the output. If that fails but a renderer can show usable pages, it may offer a separately identified visual fallback. Keep the original untouched and treat the two result levels differently.
When neither works
Try a fresh download or an earlier copy. A severely truncated file may have no recoverable page content. A password prompt is not proof of corruption. If a document has a certificate-based digital signature, any rewrite can invalidate that signature; obtain a fresh original from its issuer when authenticity matters.
